Chapter Twenty-Three
"Wow," Syble said as we left the theater.
"Yeah, that was pretty fun," I replied, yawning. My stomach was full from lunch and then the popcorn and soda. I wouldn't need to eat anything for dinner tonight.
"Wow," she repeated.
"Yeah," I replied again. "Pretty crazy, right?"
"Pretty crazy?" Syble flew in front of me. There was a wildness in her red eyesâmore so than usual. "The thing he did with herâ â"
"Yes," I cut her off. "It was crazy."
"And then he took hisâ â"
"Yep."
"âand he shoved it up herâ â"
"I was there."
"âand then she startedâ â"
"Syble!"
âall over her grandma!"
Emiko snorted, covering her mouth with her hand. I wanted to put my arm over her, but I didn't.
"Let's just get home," I said.
"Through the Wires," Emiko said.
I sighed. "I thought we were done with that idea? Come on. The quicker we get home the quicker we can play a few games of SunStation."
"I'm over it." Emiko batted the air.
"That thing cost me a fortune!"
Emiko turned to face me, staring up at me with her big, adorable eyes, glimmering with some kind of emotion I didn't recognize from her but certainly could have gotten lost in.
"I'll play with you if it makes you happy," Emiko said. "Right now, I only care about taking a trip through the Wires to see your powers."
"And I stood over your brother's grave and promised him I'd keep you safe," I replied. "It's a no." I said that more sternly than I'd have liked. I'd said words that I wouldn't have liked to say at all.
And they were true.
"So?" Emiko said. "He's dead, and we're not, so whatever you said to him doesn't matter now. Or are you selectively keeping your word yet happy to break it in other ways? Were you looking after me last night? Will you be looking after me again tonight? I certainly hope so if that's what you think you were doing."
But as she spoke, my gaze traveled outward to Syble, floating away toward the big WARNING! ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK! sign above the flimsy gates.
She floated right through it.
I shook my head.
"No, never again?" Emiko questioned. "But Syble said I could get my pussy ate."
"When did she say that to you!" I spat, grabbing her hand and dragging her in the direction of the Wires. "This is even more stupid. I don't have any powers when she isn't with me."
Just then, Syble floated back through the gate, her head floating through the gate with a big grin. "Are we going then?"
"No," I said.
"Okay, bye." And she floated through the gate again to disappear somewhere in the distance.
"Syble!" I yelled, not caring who would hear me. "Get back inside me. Now!"
An elderly couple walked past, clicking their tongues at me and bemoaning about kids these days. Why is it always an elderly couple who catches me saying the darndest things?
"Come on," I said. "I just need to get close enough to talk to her without people hearing."
"There can be people in the Wires," Emiko said. "Even...wirestriders." She said this with a wild grin.
